About SASA
The South African Society of Anaesthesiologists (SASA) is the host society of the WCA2008. SASA lists over 850 members and aims to promote the science of anaesthesiology and allied sciences in South Africa.
South African Society of Anaesthetists (SASA) was inaugurated in August 1943, in the middle of the Second World War, in Johannesburg, making it the first Anaesthetic Society in Africa and the ninth Anaesthetic Society in the world! At its inception, the society membership consisted of 25 of the 26 registered anaesthetists in South Africa and our membership now represents over 80% of all South African registered anaesthetic specialists. The objectives of the Society, then as now, were the promotion of the science and art of anaesthesia, support of education in anaesthesia including continuing medical development in the specialty and the promotion of the interests of all practising anaesthetists in Southern Africa. SASA was a Founder Member of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists when it was established in Scheveningen in The Netherlands in 1955. The society plays an active role in the development of anaesthesia in Southern Africa, campaigning for the establishment of chairs of Anaesthesia and playing a leading role in the development of the College of Anaesthetists of South Africa. The society participates extensively in the development of anaesthesia in the whole of Africa. SASA co-organised the All Africa Congress in Harare in April 1997 with the Zimbabwe Association, and was a Founder Member of the Africa Regional Section of the WFSA. After a successful presentation to the Bid Committee of WFSA in Sydney in 1996, SASA was accorded the honour of hosting the 14th World Congress of Anaesthesiologists in 2008. We are proud to host this prestigious event and extend to all our visitors a traditionally warm South African welcome.
