Fifty years of progress in anaesthesia, the development of a specialty Chair : Dr. Anneke Meursing, WFSA President
Misfortune will befall one who plays the fool with old people
Xhosa of South Africa

The plenary scientific session of the World Congress of Anaesthesiologists honouring its first president Harold Griffith will highlight the major thrusts of WFSA : safety and education.

Distinguished academics from around the world will present the 21st century’s view on the evolution of anaesthesia from a discipline whose primary function was the provision of pain relief during surgery into the wide-ranging speciality it has now become, truly peri-operative medicine with a special focus on how appropriate education can render anaesthesia practice safer now and in the future. Human errors have been shown to dramatically contribute to preventable adverse events.

The report ‘To Err Is Human’ shook the medical world to its foundations more than any previous scientific publication. The World Health Organisation has since then put patient’s safety high on their agenda. Anaesthesia has led the world in examining adverse events and the analysis thereof. Insight and understanding of the application and translation of the immense bowl of knowledge on human behaviour into establishing an effective, high quality safety management system in your group, department or hospital will be explored. Transport and oil industry have developed and apply effective health and safety systems since years. Patient’s safety, concern for our future practitioners and the economics involved in litigation compel us to listen attentively to the wisdom and advice given by prominent leaders in the field.
Education in all its forms features prominently in most WFSA activities. Our primary concern must remain above all to teach medical students, physicians and anaesthesiologists on a continuing basis thus creating a challenging, learning culture within the specialty. Additionally, we are charged with the education of para-medical cadre fulfilling essential roles in primary care of our future patient. Envisaging continuing medical education for now and in the future requires a colleague with a vision and foresight. Establishing education in difficult circumstances is an almost greater challenge.

The Zulu of South Africa say : A person who won’t take advice, gets knowledge when trouble overtakes him!

I promise you a fascinating scientific session that shines on achievements in the past whilst at the same time beams into the future. Ladies and gentlemen, I warmly welcome you to attend WFSA, BACK TO THE FUTURE

Dr Anneke E.E. Meursing, chair - WFSA President

Safety for All
/p>

Embracing a worldwide profile and emphasizing the important of safety in all aspects and echelons of anaesthesia, the education and research thereof have always been the background thoughts of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists and their members. As WFSA president I have done my best to elucidate these aspects in this Harold Griffith Symposium comprising 3 sessions. Harold Griffith’s country of fame, Canada and the important role the Canadian Anaesthetist’s Society play within WFSA is reflected by a Canadian anaesthesiologist in each session.
