Theme: New aspects of clinical pharmacology for
anesthesia
A satellite meeting of the International Society for
Anesthetic Pharmacology (ISAP) will be held at the
Spier Wine Estate (Click
here) in Stellenbosch on Friday 29th February
2008, prior to the 14th World Congress of
Anaesthesiologists. ISAP (formerly the Society for
Intravenous Anesthesia) is a non-profit organization
with an international membership, which is dedicated
to teaching and research about clinical pharmacology
in anesthesia, with particular reference to
anesthetic drugs (Click
here). The conference theme will be "New Aspects
of clinical pharmacology for anesthesia". The
learning objectives will be to give an overview of
recent developments in clinical pharmacology that
affect the conduct of anesthesia.
Internationally recognized speakers from the USA and
Europe will be covering a range of topics that are
important to practising anesthesiologists. The
target audience will be anesthesiologists who are
interested in new pharmacologic developments that
affect everyday practice. The format will be
lectures with ample time set aside for questions and
stimulating discussion. Topics will include new
aspects of anaesthesia delivery, new formulations,
rational approach to anti-emetic therapy, opioid
receptor tolerance, statins and anaesthesia,
sedation in the ICU, front-end kinetics and
long-term toxicity of anaesthetics Spier Wine Estate
had its origins in 1692 when the Dutch governor of
the Cape, Simon van der Stel granted the farm to a
German settler Arnout Janz.
In 1712, the farm was bought by Hans Heinrich
Hattingh who named it after his hometown Speyer, on
a tributary of the Rhine River. Built in the typical
Cape Dutch architectural style, the original
buildings have been beautifully restored. Besides an
hotel, restaurants and a performing arts theatre,
the estate provides many activities that include
wine tasting, golf, walks & trails, horse riding,
and encounters with cheetahs and eagles.
Registration for the conference will include a
unique dining experience at the Moyo outdoor
restaurant, at which a sumptuous buffet of African
flavoured dishes is accompanied by indigenous live
entertainment. For those delegates who wish to enjoy
the estate and the country district of Stellenbosch
at their leisure on the following day, (highly
recommended) a number of rooms have been reserved
for delegates who wish to stay overnight at their
own expense.
A bus will be provided to transport delegates from
the Cape Town Waterfront to Spier in the morning and
back again after the evening's entertainment.
For those who have stayed overnight, a bus will be
provided on late Saturday afternoon to return them
back to the Cape Town Waterfront.
