The reserve is set in Maputaland, KwaZulu-Natal’s northern-most region. It is an area of game parks, wetlands and marine reserves. Sparsely populated, this region is one of the most pristine; a place where the wonders of the African bush (including 380 bird species) can be experienced first-hand. It is this contrast of habitats that makes Phinda such an exciting safari destination. Phinda is a Zulu word meaning “the return”. One of the biggest reintroductions of game in Africa – a n operation dubbed “phinda izilwane” (“the return of the wild animals”) – lent the reserve its name. You’ll get up close to these beasts of the bush as you set out on your daily game drives in an open Land Rover. Far from mere sightseeing, each drive is a richly rewarding interpreted excursion, thanks to the company of your knowledgeable guide whose tracking ability and understanding of wildlife behaviour never fail to impress the guests.
