NATURE AND OUTDOOR
Shamwari Private Game Reserve
About 45 minutes’ drive from Port Elizabeth airport you’ll wind your way into the lush green bush along the
Bushmans River to reach Shamwari Game Reserve - 20 000 hectares of wild garden teeming with life.
A divergent variety of fauna such as you’ll find nowhere else on this continent lives here. It is an array
of animals made possible by the five different eco-systems. Each supports a different population, so your
morning and evening game drives in topless Land Rover will reveal a multitude of diverse plants, large
and small animals and birds.
You’ll be welcomed to one of the lodges – in refined luxury and elegance, with every imaginable creature
comfort laid on. (A comforting thought after a day out in the bush.)
But you’re here to answer the call of nature, and that is what Shamwari is about. It’s about enjoying –
and conserving – a vanishing way of life. For its conservation efforts, Shamwari has received numerous
international awards, including the World's Leading Conservation Company & Game Reserve – for five years running.
It’s the safari of a lifetime! Great game viewing, made even more memorable by the guides who will
interpret things for you; each vehicle has a trained ranger who will increase your enjoyment with his
knowledge of both the flora and fauna. The rangers are in 2-way communication with each other at all
times, so on any day they know where the game is, and how to find the elusive animals such as the rare Black Rhino.
The heat of the day is usually spent in the shade, playing tennis, swimming, reading and, of course, enjoying lunch.
Between 4 and 5 pm, you assemble again for the evening drive. As the animals emerge from their midday cover, you may
see elephants browsing, rhino drinking at a waterhole, or perhaps the shy bushbuck motionless in the dense bushveld.
At dusk, the Land Rover stops at some panoramic spot for a sundowners (from the icebox ) and snacks.
Then, as the light fades, your ranger will plug in a powerful hand-held light. With its help, you can sweep the
veldt, seeing first the eyes and then the forms of a variety of nocturnal animals. By 8:00pm you are back at your
lodge where a drink in the bar with your ranger – amid cheerful recollections of the day's discoveries –
is followed either by another great meal expertly prepared by our chefs (optional), or a barbecue next to a
roaring fire (also optional). Finally, a hot shower and a well-earned sleep.
No wonder this is rated as the ultimate African adventure!
